Today we are grateful for...

  • drumming in music.
  • creating a surprise for someone special.
  • Calgary Stampede build.
  • obstacle course in gym.
  • rain!
  • Kakyosin at the pond.

How can we reflect the history, voices, legacy and vibrancy of Alberta? What can we add to the Calgary Stampede? We have designed a machine that will answer these questions.

The store is open! We have been given a credit card and $100. What can we purchase? Can we create our machine and still have money left over?

Kakyosin - being keenly observant on the land. What are the animals, plants, and land teaching us?

Thankful for wagons and sit-upon mats. They make our outdoor work easier.

Thankful for sunshine, beautiful parks, and FRIENDS!

June 6 happenings, and list of resources needed

 Today we are grateful for...

  • drumming in music.
  • Dr. Dodgeball in gym.
  • Calgary Stampede design, time to sit square and talk about it.
  • reading book clubs.
  • recess in the sun.
  • solving 2 digit multiplication problems in math, and checking the answer with division.
We have been looking closely at the Calgary Stampede with this question in mind:

Does the Calgary Stampede reflect the history, voices, legacy and vibrancy of Alberta? Who or what is missing? What could be even better?

Yesterday we designed something that will reflect this question. Today we "sat square" with a partner and asked each other these questions:

  1. What is this design, what does it do?

  2. How does it reflect the legacy or history of Alberta?

  3. How does it make the Calgary Stampede better?

  4. What simple machines does it include?

  5. What materials might you need to build it?

Here is a list of resources that students came up with for their Calgary Stampede Build Project. Please send any items to school if you have extra to share:

May 31

Yesterday we were able to join Calgary's LitCon 2023

The virtual presentations included a keynote speaker Kenneth Oppel, "A Life's Scribbling". He talked about how he got started as an author. We learned that anything around us can be turned into a story!

In the afternoon we had a virtual tutorial with a children's book illustrator Vanja Kragulj. She taught us how to create characters using circles.

(These presentations were not recorded, and our camera was off.)

Today we enjoyed the grade 2 assembly. It was about the 7 Grandfather Teachings.

We went outside and participated in the Iron Campers challenge. We were rated on creativity, use of materials, and collaboration.

Ranching Dangers

We have been researching about ranching in Alberta. Today we brainstormed possible dangers that ranchers face these days. Here is a list that we came up with...

We then listened to news casts about three big problems that ranchers face here in Alberta. Can you guess what they are? (Mrs. Allan re-enacted one of the dangers by becoming a species of animal that invaded the classroom and ate paper.)

MAY 9 - OH Ranch Information and Rollers

OH Ranch field trip on Monday, May 15th:
We learned about the ranch yesterday during our meeting with the field trip coordinators.

Important information:

The weather can change quickly, especially close to the mountains. This is mainly an outdoor field trip. OH Ranch staff have asked for the students to wear/bring the following:

  • Lunch and snack, with reusable containers. There are no composting/trash/recycling receptacles on site due to the location.
  • Long pants and long socks (in case of ticks)
  • Extra pair of socks
  • Appropriate shoes or boots for walking (We will be playing tag games and walking up a hill.)
  • Layered outerwear (rain gear, sweater, jacket, hat gloves)
  • Sunscreen (will need it if we're lucky)
  • Water bottles can be refilled on site.
  • iPads will be provided to groups for taking pictures. Cell phones will not be taken out on the bus or at the ranch. We will be following usual protocols regarding technology.

If you are volunteering, it is important that you also come with the things listed above!
Thank you so much!

Today we were introduced to a simple machine. Ask me about how rollers work.

A quick video of success...

Field Trip Form, Math, Mental Health

Field Trip Forms are due Monday. Please print, sign and return.

Click here for the parent risk form: OH RANCH FIELD TRIP FORM

We reviewed multiplication using landmark numbers (x10 or x20) as well as the area model. Yes, we continue to work on any flat erasable surface that we can find!

Mental health begins with our inner voices. What are we telling ourselves? We can be aware of any negative self-talk. We have the power to change our mental and physical health by flipping that inner voice!

Remember, help is always just a phone call away!

Hats ON for Mental Health on Wednesday!

WEAR A HAT  ON WEDNESDAY, TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR MENTAL HEALTH!

May 2nd: Today we are grateful for...

  • looking closely at plants outside, by perspective drawing.
  • math - multiplication and fractions.
  • music - a test!
  • playing hoop tag outside for gym.
  • all the great helpers in this class (E).
  • Miss Rumphius, a read-aloud story.
Here is an inference we made today after listening closely to the story, Miss Rumphius.
- I think Miss Rumphius will go close up to the sea and see how the plastics are harming the environment. She will clean it up. Then her grandpa will say she has completed the mission to make the world a better place. The clues we used to make this inference are that she is planning to move closer to the sea, and also that she promised to make the world a better place.

Blind perspective drawing
My partner described what she could see.
I did my best to draw what she described.
This is good practice for speaking about our perspective, and listening to the perspective of others.
